About the Choristers Guild Institute

The Choristers Guild Institute, begun in 2009, is a 3-stage program for leaders of children's and youth choirs (K-8) in churches and church schools. The certification process is designed to strengthen directors’ musical and pedagogical skills and to equip them to effectively integrate children in worship. Alumni seminar options are also available to those who have completed the 3-year certification program and wish to continue to expand their knowledge and skills.

Successful graduates of the three-summer program receive Choristers Guild "Certified Director of Young Singers" Certification, a valuable and respected professional credential, and become part of a close and supportive nationwide network of Institute alumni.

1. The Choristers Guild Certification Program is based on the belief that:

All children are artistic, creative, musical, and worshipful beings.

Effective children’s choir leaders recognize a unique calling to lead children toward more meaningful and effective participation in worship through music.

2. The certification program focuses on following areas:

Creative and Purposeful Integration of Children in Worship
Music Teaching Skills
Choral Methods
Effective Organization of a Children's Music Ministry
Personal Musicianship

Who Should Attend?

Years 1, 2, and 3 - Certification Program

The Institute is designed for Directors who are currently leading young singers, K-8, in a Christian church or school setting and those preparing to be full-time, part-time, or committed volunteer choir directors in these settings.

A degree in music is not required, but musical literacy is fundamental to success as a participant in the Choristers Guild Institute.

First year participants are required to submit a Letter of Support from a supervising Pastor or staff member.  A sample letter is available here.

CGI Certified Alumni (Certified Directors of Young Singers)

Institute alumni are invited to return for a full week (Sunday to Friday) or join us Thursday evening for the Helen Kemp Banquet. As we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Institute in 2018, we particularly encourage Alumni to join us for this special celebration and to reconnect with fellow Alumni, Mentors, and current and past Faculty. Alumni will have the opportunity to select from classes offered.  We urge alumni to make their reservations early so we can staff the Institute to meet alumni needs.
