Edited by John Barnard and David Iliff, Season by Season is a reproducible resource offering accessible and practical material for seasons of the church year, festivals and other occasions (apart from Advent, Christmas and Epiphany already featured in the companion volume, The Carol Book (G-8434)). Season by Season contains 100 items--mostly straightforward anthems in a variety of arrangements offering plentiful material for choirs of differing standards and voicings. Not only choirs that can sing in four parts, but also choirs with few men, and choirs with womens' and childrens' voices only will find a wealth of music here they can tackle with confidence. Season by Season contains a wealth of music for Lent, Passiontide, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Ascensiontide, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Harvest, All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day, Confirmation, and more! At least three items are provided for each festival and season; and for the major events of the Church Year, such as Pentecost and Easter, the choice is far wider. The items in this book are mainly in 4-parts (SATB). However, the accompanying CD-Rom offers a range of extra material:
Arrangements for 3-part choir (soprano, alto and men)
Arrangements for 2-part singing (either 2 equal voices or upper and men's voices
Arrangements for unison singing
Alternative accompaniments for piano or keyboard without pedals
Items in a different (usually lower) key
Vocal parts alone, reducing the number of pages needed for photocopying
Accompaniments alone, reducing the amount of page turning
In addition, the CD-Rom contains an audio section, recorded by Sarum Voices, offering 11 beautifully performed examples of the range of material available. With such a variety of material, choirs of all levels will be thrilled with what Season by Season can offer! John Barnard has worked in many large churches as a director of music. He is a well-known composer and arranger of hymn tunes, including the tune GUITING POWER. David Iliff is Director of Music at Malvern Priory, and they worked together on a number of church music projects since the early eighties.
