Start Singing! Choral Workshop
DescriptionStart Singing! A choral workshop to rejuvenate your choirs Equip yourself with tools to create and energize choral programs in your local church or community. We will discuss: recruiting and organizing a children’s music ministry, planning and leading effective rehearsals, and developing healthy singing tone and technique. The material in this session will inspire you to start or re-energize your children and youth choirs. By attending our chapter event, you will receive a free hard copy of the 88-page Start Singing! (CGBK87, a $34.95 value), published by Choristers Guild. In the second half of the event, Katie will also lead a reading session of both new and tried-and-true music for developing choirs. Choristers Guild’s Sacred Music and Curriculum Editor Katie Houts studied music at Wartburg College, where she double majored in Church Music (Organ) and Religion. She has served in ELCA, UCC, and UMC congregations as Director of Music, Worship Curator, Organist, and Children's Choir Director. Katie is a sought-after children’s choral clinician, presenter, composer, and professional accompanist. She and her family live in Salt Lake City where she leads choral ensembles throughout the community, including Rise Up Children’s Choir—Utah’s premiere contemporary vocal performance group for ages 6-18. She conducts RUCC’s 75-voice intermediate training ensemble and is the assistant director and accompanist for the 120-voice advanced mixed children’s choir. Katie also teaches Singing to lower elementary grades at Wasatch Charter School and directs their fifth and sixth grade choirs. Start Singing!
