Description

Furman Church Music Conference
January 27-28, 2022

The Furman University Department of Music is honored to present one of the United Kingdom’s leading choral conductors, Stephen Darlington, as our clinician for the 2022 Furman University Church Music Conference. Director of Music Emeritus for Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Professor of Music Emeritus at Christ Church College, the University of Oxford – positions in which he served for over thirty years – Professor Darlington is currently Acting Director of Chapel Music at Worcester College. He has led the Christ Church Cathedral choir in performances throughout the U.K. and internationally, in addition to producing with them a large number of exceptional recordings featuring sacred choral repertory from all historical periods.

For the 2022 Church Music Conference, Stephen will lead two on-campus rehearsals of conference attendees, focusing on the three anthems to be performed by them at the Friday Evensong service. He will also conduct an open rehearsal of Furman’s acclaimed choral ensembles, the Furman Singers and Furman Chamber Choir; present lectures on the English Choral Tradition and Sacred Music of Tallis and Byrd; and lead a choral reading session. During the Friday Evensong, he will conduct the Furman Singers, as well as a Festival Choir consisting of conference attendees, the Christ Church Parish Choir, and the Furman Chamber Choir.

On Thursday evening of the conference, attendees will be treated to a recital by internationally acclaimed organist Jens Korndörfer, Professor of Organ at Georgia State University and Director of Music and Organist for First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA, on Furman’s magnificent Hartness Organ (C.B. Fisk Opus 121) in the Charles E. Daniel Memorial Chapel.

This year, we are pleased and honored to have Lois Fyfe Music providing musical scores and exhibits for the conference. Located in Nashville, TN, Lois Fyfe Music stocks a vast quantity of organ, choral, and vocal music, as well as hymnbooks, textbooks, and Royal School of Church Music materials. The Lois Fyfe Music resource specialists, including co-owners Elizabeth Smith and Jonathan Setzer, are all trained musicians with degrees and experience in organ, choral, and vocal music.
