Celebrating Women's History Month: School Choral Composers

By Victor C. Johnson on 3/9/2026

Dear Friends,

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I want to personally invite you to explore and program choral works by some of the extraordinary women who continue to shape and enrich our choral art.

It is a special joy to highlight the legacy of Mary Lynn Lightfoot, Founding Editor of Sing!, whose vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to quality have impacted generations of choirs, conductors, and composers. Her influence remains deeply woven into the heart of our mission.

I also encourage you to take a fresh look at outstanding works by Ruth Elaine Schram, Earlene Rentz, Ruth Morris Gray, Amy Bernon, and Jen Wagner. These gifted composers offer beautifully crafted repertoire that is especially well-suited for concert, festival, and contest use, with flexible voicings to meet the needs of ensembles at many levels.

Their music is expressive, accessible, and artistically rewarding- perfect selections as we honor the creativity and lasting contributions of women in our profession.

I hope you’ll visit our website (www.choristersguild.org) to browse these exceptional works and discover even more inspiring repertoire by these remarkable composers and many others.

I am sincerely grateful for all you do to advance choral music, and it is a privilege to partner with you in this work.

Warmly,

Victor C. Johnson
Editor, Sing!
