David HeinDavid Hein is the Director of Music Ministries at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa. Along with the church organist, he administrates and leads a graded children's choir program spanning the years from first through sixth grade, an adult choir, three children's choirs, one handbell choir, a wind ensemble and a contemporary ensemble. He is an advocate for the development and nurturing of children's spiritual lives through worship participation.

David holds the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Church Music from Saint Olaf College. He holds the Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. Hein has studied conducting under Kenneth Jennings, Anton Armstrong, Robert Scholz and Charles K. Smith. He has explored children's choir leadership with Cora Scholz, Anton Armstrong and Doreen Rao. Organ studies have been with John Ferguson and Robert Clark, and voice with Robert Scholz, Cora Scholz, Sigrid Johnson and Ethel Armeling.

Hein has music published by Neil A. Kjos Music Company. He has presented workshops at gatherings of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and the American Guild of Organists on several topics including "Composition and Arranging for Church Musicians," "Using Music Curriculum in Training Children's Choirs for Worship Leadership." David is co-producer of the ALCM video "Empowered to Join the Song," which is "a resource for all congregations to help empower their children to become and remain life-long worship participants." This video resource won the 2002 Award of Distinction from the Videographer Awards; a program initiated by communications professionals, recognizing quality, creativity, and resourcefulness, and honoring work raising the standards of videographic production nation-wide.

David is a member of Choristers Guild, the American Choral Directors Association, the Hymn Society and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He is also a member of the Association for Psychological Type and has completed training to be a qualified practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a self-report personality inventory designed to provide information about a person's psychological type. He is interested in using the MBTI in team-building, organizational development, communication strategies, leadership training and the exploration of one's spiritual journey.

Prior appointments include: Director of Music at Valley Lutheran High School, a Lutheran High School serving Metropolitan Phoenix, in which nearly seventy percent of the student body was involved in music and fine arts; and the Associate Director of Music at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe, Arizona. Church choirs under his leadership have toured nationally and internationally, including Canada, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, New Zealand and Australia.
