Jann Aldredge-Clanton

 

Jann Aldredge-Clanton (b. 1946) is an ordained minister, author, teacher, and chaplain. An award-winning hymn text writer, she currently serves as adjunct professor at Perkins School of Theology and Richland Community College, Dallas, Texas, and is a member of Church in the Cliff.

Her educational background includes a B.A. degree from Louisiana Polytechnic University, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas Christian University, and an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

She has served as Associate Pastor, St. John's United Methodist Church, Waco, Texas; Executive Director, Waco Conference of Christians and Jews; Pastoral Counselor, Samaritan Counseling Center of Central Texas; Chaplain, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas; Chaplain, Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Waco, Texas; English professor, Dallas Baptist University.

In collaboration with composer Larry E. Schultz, she has created Imagine God! A Children's Musical Exploring and Expressing Images of God (Choristers Guild, 2004); choral anthems; a church music curriculum resource: Sing and Dance and Play with Joy! Inclusive Songs for Young Children (2009), and two hymn collections: Inclusive Hymns for Liberating Christians (2006) and Inclusive Hymns for Liberation, Peace, and Justice (2011). She also has hymn texts published in Celebrating Grace Hymnal (2010).

Jann has many other publications, including Changing Church: Stories of Liberating Ministers (Cascade Books, 2011); Seeking Wisdom: Inclusive Blessings and Prayers for Public Occasions (Wipf & Stock, 2010); Praying with Christ-Sophia: Services for Healing and Renewal (Twenty-Third Publications, 1996; Wipf & Stock, 2007);  God, A Word for Girls and Boys (Glad River, 1993; Wipf & Stock, 2007); In Search of the Christ-Sophia: An Inclusive Christology for Liberating Christians (Twenty-Third Publications, 1995; Eakin, 2004); Breaking Free: The Story of a Feminist Baptist Minister (Eakin, 2002); In Whose Image? God and Gender (Crossroad, 2001); and Counseling People with Cancer (Westminster, 1998).

Jann co-chairs the Alliance of Baptists Equity for Women in the Church Committee, and is a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains, American Association of Pastoral Counselors, The Hymn Society, Oates Institute Publications Committee, Family and Community Ministries Journal Editorial Review Board, and Dallas Workers' Rights Board.
