In the August/September 2006
issue of The Chorister
As I write this
in mid June, I know many of you are already busy charting your course
for the new choir year which will begin all too soon. You are truly
"one in a million" and no one knows the time or dedication
you give to your preparation and planning. But how would you like
to be just one in five? Choristers Guild is looking for five people
to take part in an extraordinary opportunity, the Choristers Guild
Children's Choir Leadership Certification Program. Read all about
it on page 3 of this issue. It's a rare and exciting opportunity!
[Follow this
link for certification information
on the website. Deadline for application, August 15, 2006.]
Take a moment
to guarantee new choristers in your ministry this fall. Remove the
center poster from the binding of this issue; fill in the pertinent
information regarding your program (parent meeting, first rehearsal,
special kickoff event, rehearsal schedule, etc.) with a marker in
the allotted white space and place in a prominent location in your
church. Then get ready to answer your phone as many new choristers
begin to fill your choir!
The beginning
of a new year opens windows for new challenge and opportunity to
dig deeper into the life of faith and community with children. David
Davidson, in "Privileged and Challenged to Serve," calls
us to think fresh and creatively about the joy and responsibility
of our work. Jayne Southwick Cool shares a unique perspective as
composer/director/teacher in "Plan for Success: An Anthem Lesson
Plan" as she develops a "friendship between the singers
in your choir and the anthems they meet in rehearsal." You
will look at lectionary readings with renewed appreciation for possibility
in Marilyn Comer's "Children in Worship: Let the Children Speak."
Carol Nyberg-Caraviotis' Devotions for September and October are
deep and profound. You might think Carol and Marilyn sipped many
cups of tea together as their work is so companionable. You will
delight in the use of these reinforcing resources, one as the shared
public expression of the other, the child's inner spirituality.
May we be filled
with grace and renewed with joy as children lead us to deeper faith
and worship.
